HOW TO PREVENT WINDSHIELD DAMAGE

HOW TO PREVENT WINDSHIELD DAMAGE

There’s nothing more frustrating than noticing a chip in your vehicle’s windshield. Cracked and chipped windshields are very common, and in many instances, unavoidable. It’s not always possible to swerve to avoid a large rock or know when there is going to be a hailstorm. However, all drivers should do everything possible to prevent windshield damage. There are a few easy things you can do on a daily basis to increase the lifespan of your windshield.

WATCH THE FORECAST

Temperature fluctuations are very common, and in most instances, changes in the weather should not negatively affect your windshield. Extreme temperature changes, however, are notorious for causing cracks to form. Even though windshield glass is usually tempered, it cannot withstand all changes in the weather. If the temperature suddenly drops, for example, the glass may shrink and crack.

If you live in an environment where the weather is known for being finicky, it may be best to keep your vehicle away from the elements. Whenever possible, store your vehicle in a temperature controlled environment, such as a garage or covered parking area. Always warm up your vehicle slowly, and don’t suddenly heat up your windshield to melt frost or ice.

CLEAN THE GLASS

A clean windshield is very important. Not only does dirty, smudged glass obstruct your vision, but it also more prone to cracking. Even if you don’t see any noticeable damage, your glass is most likely covered in small scratches. If dirt and debris gets into these scratches, a larger crack may form.

Always use a soft, clean cloth to clean your windshield. Microfiber is a great option because it won’t scratch the glass, and it is also lint-free. Use a glass cleaner to remove any dirt or fingerprints. Never use all-purpose cleaner as it may be abrasive and damage the surface.

CHANGE THE WIPERS

Windshield wipers are designed to whisk away water from your windshield. Depending on the climate where you live, you may use your wipers regularly or not. Regardless of how often you use your wipers, they will eventually wear out. Not only do old, damaged windshield wipers perform poorly in the rain, but they may also scratch the surface of your glass windshield.

As a rule of thumb, it’s important to install new windshield wipers at least once a year. You may need to purchase new wipers sooner if you notice your current set is skipping when in use. Choose high quality wipers that are designed to fit the make and model of your vehicle.

DRIVE WITH CAUTION

When you’re behind the wheel, you need to drive cautiously. Always be on the lookout for possible obstacles. If you drive on country, unpaved roads, for example, go slowly. This will help prevent loose gravel from hitting your windshield. If you ever get caught in a sudden hailstorm, try to find a covered area where you can sit it out.

The windshield on your vehicle is your first line of protection from the elements. If your windshield becomes damaged, it will no longer perform at its peak. While not all damage is avoidable, you should still take the necessary steps to prevent cracks. Always have any new chips or cracks repaired by a local auto glass company.
