WINDSHIELD REPAIR KIT VS. WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT

Windshield Repair Kit

We’ve all had it happen – You’re driving along when suddenly out of nowhere, something flies up and hits your windshield. In many instances, all that you’ll have to deal with is the loud noise from the object striking the glass. However, if it leaves a mark, does the windshield need to be repaired or replaced?

THINGS TO CONSIDER

When an object is propelled at a high rate of speed and damages a windshield, it’s important to determine the best means to fix it. Sometimes the answer may be obvious, such as when the glass has a huge crack or a hole in it, but what if the ding appears to be minor? There are several factors to consider before deciding on whether repairing it or replacing it will be the best solution.

  • LOCATION

The location of the damage will help you determine if the glass can be fixed or replaced. Is it blocking the driver’s view? If so, replacing is usually the best choice.

  • SIZE

A small chip or tiny crack can often be filled with a repair kit or by a professional. Large or spreading cracks may indicate replacement.

  • AGE

Newer glass with no previous damage can oftentimes be fixed with a kit; however, it’s usually recommended that you replace older windshields.

WINDSHIELD REPAIR KITS

If the windshield fits the criteria for repairing it, and you do not have glass coverage on your auto insurance policy, you can purchase a DIY repair kit at most auto supply stores. They are relatively easy to use if you follow the directions that come in the kit.

Keep in mind, however, that any repairs should be done within the first week or so, before the damaged spot becomes contaminated from dirt and water. The use of glass treatments should also be avoided before a repair has been completed.

If the repair fails, which is more common with DIY repair kits, then you will probably have to replace the panel sooner rather than later.

WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT

When a chip cannot be easily filled, replacement is needed. This is also true if the crack causes the windshield to fail inspection or if it impairs the driver’s vision. Replacement costs more than repairing it yourself, but a local glass repair company will complete the job in no time at all. A warranty will also be offered on the completed work.

Even with insurance, you will most likely need to meet a deductible before the insurance company pays their part. If your deductible is close to the price of the replacement, then it may be smarter to pay out of pocket instead of filing a claim.

Amazingly, many chips and minor cracks can be repaired. As long as the spot being fixed will not be in the driver’s line of vision, and multiple repairs will not be centered in one area, it’s likely that windshield can be saved.

If you’re in doubt about what to do, simply take your vehicle to a place that specializes in windshield repair and have them do an evaluation. Most repair shops accept insurance, and insurance companies would prefer to pay in full for a repair to be done, rather than covering the cost for a new windshield to be put in.
